Marble Falls girls basketball secures district win at Jarrell

The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team beat Jarrell 59-37 for its first District 24-4A victory Jan. 10.

“I thought we came out much more ready to play than the game we had the game before,” head coach John Berkman said. “Every single person on the team scored, and that’s a good sign that they got the message. Everybody has to make plays.”

After the 43-29 loss to Burnet Jan. 6, Berkman said the contest came down to which team made shots. The Lady Mustangs recommitted themselves to producing on the offensive end in the second district contest and ensured this game wasn’t much of a match-up.

“We scored some in transition, and we were able to score some in the half court,” he said. “I don’t know what the assists numbers were, but they should be high.”

Junior center Lexie Edwards led with 13 points followed by senior guard Alyssa Berkman with 12. The rest of the individual scoring was six or seven points.

“Everybody who was suited up to play scored,” the coach said. “It was good.”

He also commended his players for their commitment to being equally dominant on the defensive end.

“We were much more engaged and gave a better effort,” Berkman said.

The Lady Mustangs now prepare to face Lampasas (22-8, 2-0), which beat Burnet 44-22 Jan. 10 and sits alone at the top of the district standings. Lampasas senior guard Payton Tatum played in the contest.

The game is set for 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at Marble Falls High School’s Max Copeland Gym.

“This time of year, every game counts,” Berkman said. “You can’t afford to go on losing streaks. Every (opponent) matters, and you have to look at it that way. (Against Jarrell), we put together a full game, and it showed up. They’ve proven they can score at a high clip. We have to be ready to play. If we’re not ready to play, we’ll get beat.”
